I just got an iPhone 17 and realized my old charger doesn’t seem to fit, so I’m not sure if it uses USB-C, Lightning, or something else. I need help figuring out the correct iPhone 17 charger type so I can buy the right cable and power adapter without wasting money.
iPhone 17 uses USB-C, not Lightning.
If your old charger was the older iPhone cable, it won’t fit. You need a USB-C cable. The phone itself has a USB-C port on the bottom.
Quick breakdown:
- Port on iPhone 17, USB-C.
- Cable you need, USB-C to USB-C for most new wall chargers.
- If your wall brick has old USB-A, get a USB-A to USB-C cable instead.
- For faster charging, use a USB-C power adapter rated 20W or higher.
Example:
If you buy Apple’s 20W USB-C adapter and a USB-C cable, you’re set.
Also, MagSafe wireless charging still works if you want no cable at all. Your old Lightning charger is the wrong one, yep.
Yep, it’s USB-C on the iPhone 17.
One small add-on to what @reveurdenuit said: the confusing part is usually not the phone end, it’s the charger brick end. The iPhone 17 itself takes USB-C, but the cable you buy depends on the power adapter you already own.
So:
- old Lightning cable: won’t fit
- USB-C cable: yes
- old USB-A wall brick: can still work with a USB-A to USB-C cable, just slower sometimes
- newer USB-C wall brick: use USB-C to USB-C
Also, don’t overthink “special iPhone 17 charger.” There isn’t some weird new Apple-only plug or anyhting. It’s just USB-C. If you want the least hassle, buy a decent 20W or higher USB-C charger and a USB-C cable and you’re done. MagSafe is also an option if you’d rather charge wirelessly, but wired is still simpler tbh.
