Need help with my Canon R50V?

My Canon R50V started acting up after I changed a few settings, and now I can’t get it to work the way it did before. I need help figuring out what went wrong and how to fix it so I can start shooting again.

First thing, reset the stuff most people change by accident.

On the R50 V, go to Menu, wrench tab, Reset camera, then pick Reset settings. If you changed custom funcs too, reset those too. Do not format the card unless you want your files gone.

If you do not want a full reset, check these first.

  1. Photo or Video mode. A lot of options change here.
  2. AF mode. Set Servo AF off for stills if focus feels weird.
  3. Drive mode. Single shot vs self-timer gets changed all the time.
  4. Exposure mode. M, Av, Tv, Auto. Wrong one makes the camrea feel broken.
  5. Touch shutter, digital IS, eye detect, subject detect.
  6. HDMI or webcam mode, if the screen/output looks odd.

If it still acts weird, pull battery for 2 mins, reinsert, test with one lens only. If you post the exact symptom, people here can narrow it down fast.

I’d check one thing before doing a full reset like @suenodelbosque suggested: make sure you didn’t save the weird setup into a custom mode or swap the stills/video presets around. Canon menus can get sneaky like that, and a reset sometimes feels like using a sledgehammer on a loose screw.

A few less-obvious gotchas on the R50 line:

  • Silent shutter on/off. This can mess with flash, burst behavior, and how the camera “feels.”
  • RAW/JPEG switch. If playback or buffer seems off, this matters.
  • Manual focus got toggled on the lens or in camera.
  • Exposure simulation. If the screen looks too dark/bright indoors, this is a common culprit.
  • Auto ISO max/min got changed.
  • Focus area got set to a tiny box, so it looks like AF is broken.
  • If adapted lens, check adapter contacts. Those can act dumb for no reason.

Also, don’t ignore the possibilty that it’s lens-specific. Try body + different lens, and test in full auto just to isolate it. If you can describe the exact symptom, like won’t focus, dark screen, no shutter, weird video crop, etc, it’ll be way easier to pin down.
