My iPhone 16 got splashed with water, and now I’m worried it might be damaged. I need help figuring out if the iPhone 16 is actually waterproof or just water resistant, and what steps I should take right now to avoid any issues.
iPhone 16 is water resistant, not waterproof.
Apple rates recent iPhones at IP68. For most models, this means dust-tight and water resistance up to 6 meters for 30 minutes in lab tests, with fresh water. Real life is messier. Pressure, soap, salt water, pool chemicals, and prior drops all reduce protection.
If it got splashed, you’re likely fine.
Do this now.
Wipe it dry with a soft cloth.
Unplug all cables.
Do not charge it until the port is dry.
Tap it gently with the charging port facing down.
Leave it in a dry area with airflow.
Do not do this.
Do not use a hair dryer.
Do not stick cotton swabs in the port.
Do not put it in rice. Rice does almost nothing and leaves dust.
If you see a liquid detected alert, wait. Charging while wet is the main risk.
If the phone starts acting weird, muffled speaker, no charging, screen flicker, heat, shut it down and let it dry longer. If problems stay, get it checked. Apple’s warranty does not cover liquid damage, which kinda sucks tbh.
Not waterproof. Just water resistant. Important difference.
@cacadordeestrelas is right on the main point, but I’d add this: a splash is usually no big deal unless the phone already had a cracked screen, damaged seals, or was exposed to something nastier than plain water. Coffee, soda, saltwater, soapy sink water, and pool water are way more annoying than a clean splash.
What I’d check right now:
- look for fogging in the camera lenses
- test the speakers at low volume only after it’s been sitting a bit
- don’t keep pressing buttons over and over ‘to see if it still works’
- if MagSafe charging is an option later, use that first instead of the port once the outside is fully dry
One place I kinda disagree with people in general: they act like every water contact is a near-death event. It isn’t. A splash on an iPhone 16 is probly fine. The bigger risk is panic-charging it or messing with the port too soon.
If it was just a quick splash, dry the outside and leave it alone for a while. If you start seeing camera haze, speaker distortion that doesn’t improve, or charging issues tomorrow, then yeah, get it checked. Apple’s water resistance is more like ‘damage reduction,’ not a promise.
iPhone 16 is not waterproof. It is water resistant, and that rating is mostly for fresh water under controlled conditions, not real-life mystery splashes.
I mostly agree with @cacadordeestrelas, but I’m a little less relaxed about “usually fine” because seal performance drops with age, heat, drops, and repairs. A brand-new phone and a phone that’s been in a hot car all summer are not the same.
What I’d do that hasn’t been said yet:
- Power it off if there is any chance water got into openings.
- Remove the case and SIM tray area if applicable so trapped moisture can escape.
- Keep it upright with the port facing down on a dry cloth.
- Do not use rice. It does basically nothing useful and leaves dust behind.
- Wait before charging, especially wired charging.
Pros for the ‘’: can help with cleanup or protection if it’s a drying or moisture-control accessory. Cons for the ‘’: useless if it encourages charging too soon or blocks airflow.
If it was only a brief clean-water splash, odds are decent it survives fine. If the splash was saltwater or sugary liquid, I’d be quicker to get it professionally inspected.
