Is It Wrong To Be Polite To AI, Or Is It Good Practice?

I’ve noticed I always say please and thank you when I use AI chatbots, and now I’m wondering if that’s actually helpful or just unnecessary. Some people say being polite to AI is good practice because it reinforces respectful communication habits, while others say it wastes time and can even affect how efficiently you write prompts. I’m trying to figure out whether being polite to AI matters, if it changes the quality of responses, and what the best practice is for everyday AI use.

I think it’s fine, and for most people it’s good practice.

A few practical reasons.

  1. It shapes your own habits.
    If you type to AI all day, your tone becomes muscle memory. Keeping it polite helps you carry the same tone into email, chat, and support tickets. Small thing, but it adds up.

  2. It often improves prompts.
    Polite users tend to write fuller requests. “Please summarize this in 3 bullets” gives more structure than “summarize.” The useful part is clarity, not manners by themselves.

  3. It does not hurt much.
    The cost is a few extra tokens. For one chat, that’s tiny. At scale, companies might trim fluff for cost, but personal use is differnt.

  4. AI does not have feelings.
    So you are not protecting the bot’s emotions. You are shaping your own behavior and making your requests easier to read.

My take, say please and thank you if it feels natural. Skip it if you want speed. The bigger issue is being specific. Polite and vague is less useful than direct and clear.

I don’t think it’s wrong at all, but I also think people over-moralize it a bit.

What matters more to me is whether talking to AI in a certain way changes how you frame requests. If saying please makes you slow down and phrase things clearly, great. If it makes you add fluff and bury the actual task, then it’s kinda counterproductive.

Also, there’s a social angle people miss. Kids and teens using assistants all day probably do pick up habits from it. So in a household or classroom, modeling basic courtesy even toward a tool might not be the worst idea. Not because the bot “deserves” it, but because humans around you notice patterns.

So yeah, be polite if that feels natural. Be direct if that works better. Just don’t confuse manners with quality prompting. Clear beats nice every time, tbh.

If I had to make a rule:

  • Be polite when it helps tone or context
  • Do not treat courtesy like a moral duty

Cons:

  • can add fluff
  • may slow repetitive workflows
  • some people overthink it way too much
