I accidentally blocked a friend’s number on my Android phone and now none of their calls or texts are coming through. I’ve tried looking in my phone and messaging app settings but I can’t find where the block list is or how to remove their number from it. Can someone walk me through the exact steps to unblock a number on Android, and mention if it’s different on Samsung or Pixel phones?
Happened to me last month and I thought my friend ghosted me lol. Here is what you try.
First, check the Phone app.
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the three dots in the top right.
- Tap Settings.
- Look for “Blocked numbers” or “Call blocking”.
- Find your friend’s number.
- Tap the X or Unblock.
If your phone uses Google Phone, there is also:
Settings → Caller ID & spam → Blocked numbers.
Next, check the Messages app.
On Google Messages:
- Open Messages.
- Tap your profile icon or three dots.
- Settings.
- Spam & blocked.
- Find your friend.
- Tap Unblock.
On Samsung Messages:
- Open Messages.
- Tap three dots.
- Settings.
- Block numbers and spam.
- Block numbers.
- Remove the number from the list.
Also check Contacts:
- Open Contacts.
- Find your friend.
- Open their contact.
- Tap the three dots.
- Look for an option like “Unblock contact” or “Remove from blocked list”.
If you still do not see anything:
- Settings app.
- Search at the top for “blocked” or “block”.
- Open “Blocked numbers” or “Call blocking”.
- Clear it from there.
On some carriers, your line has network level blocking.
For that:
- Log in to your carrier account or app.
- Look for “Call filter”, “Smart family”, “Spam blocking”.
- Check if your friend is listed there and remove.
Last step, restart the phone, then ask your friend to call and text you. If it fails, try deleting their contact, restart, then save it again and test.
If you’ve tried all the app menus like @nachtschatten suggested and still can’t find where your friend is blocked, there are a few less-obvious places Android hides this stuff.
-
Check your default dialer & SMS apps
Sometimes you’re looking in the wrong app.- Go to Settings → Apps → Default apps.
- Make sure you know which app is set for “Phone” and “SMS.”
- Then open those exact apps and check their block/spam sections. A lot of people check Samsung Phone while actually using Google Phone, or vice versa.
-
Check “Do Not Disturb” filters
It’s possible you didn’t block their number, but DND is filtering them out.- Settings → Notifications → Do Not Disturb (or Sound & vibration → Do Not Disturb).
- Look for “Allowed callers” / “Allowed messages.”
- If you only allow “Contacts” and your friend is not saved correctly, their calls get silenced like they’re blocked.
- Add them to contacts or add them to “allowed” lists, then test.
-
Look at Focus / Modes (on newer Android & some OEM skins)
Some phones have “Focus mode,” “Work mode,” or custom “Modes.”- Settings → Digital Wellbeing or Modes & Routines.
- Check if any mode is active that restricts calls/messages.
- Turn it off or allow your friend as an exception.
-
Reset call & SMS app settings
If things got messy, you can nuke the app’s custom rules.- Settings → Apps → [Your Phone app] → Storage.
- Tap “Clear data” or “Clear storage” (this resets settings but not your call history in most cases).
- Do the same for your messaging app.
This can wipe weird hidden block rules that don’t show clearly in the menus.
Slightly disagree with just hunting every menu forever: sometimes a clean reset is faster.
-
Check any “security” or “cleaner” apps
If you installed stuff like Truecaller, Hiya, carrier security, antivirus, “phone cleaner,” they often have their own block list.- Open each one.
- Look for “Block,” “Call filter,” “Spam,” etc.
- Remove your friend from there.
I’ve seen numbers blocked in Truecaller that never show up in Android’s native block list.
-
Verify it’s really your side, not theirs
Ask your friend to:- Call you, then immediately send you a screenshot of their call log showing they called.
- You check if any missed call appears on your side at all.
- Also ask if they maybe blocked you by accident.
If nothing at all shows up, and you’ve cleared your own blocks, it might be a carrier or SIM issue.
-
Test with a fresh contact
- Delete your friend’s contact.
- Have them text you from their phone, reply, then save that number directly from the message thread.
- Test calling/SMS again.
Sometimes a contact with multiple numbers, old formats, or country codes causes weird behavior.
-
As a last resort: network / SIM reset
If you really suspect a glitch:- Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi‑Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
- This won’t delete photos, but it’ll reset network-related stuff.
After that, power off the phone, pull the SIM (if removable), put it back, turn on, and test.
If after all this their calls work only when using another phone/SIM, then your carrier-level blocking or account features are almost definitely involved and you’ll have to call support and specifically say:
“I think a single number is blocked on the network side; please check any spam or family filters on my line.”
