Meta AI started showing up in my Instagram search and messages, and I can’t figure out how to disable it or remove it from the app. I’ve checked the settings and tried a few suggestions, but nothing seems to work. I need help finding out if there’s actually a way to turn off Meta AI on Instagram or at least limit how much it appears.
You usually can’t fully turn off Meta AI on Instagram right now. Meta put it into Search and some chat features at the app level, so there is no clean off switch for most users. Annoying, yep.
What you can do:
- Update Instagram. Sometimes the UI changes.
- Go to Instagram, Settings and privacy, then search for “Meta AI” or “AI”.
- In DMs, open the Meta AI chat, tap info, then mute it, archive it, or delete the chat if the option shows.
- In search, clear your search history. It won’t remove Meta AI, but it may hide old prompts.
- Turn off AI features where offered, some accounts get limited toggles during tests.
- If you use Messenger links with Instagram, check Messenger settings too.
If none of those show up, then your account likely has no disable option yet. Meta is rolling this out unevenly, so two people on the same app version may see diffrent settings. Your only real workaround is muting, deleting chats, and avoiding the AI entry points for now. Frustrating, but taht’s where it stands.
I’d only half-agree with @viaggiatoresolare. It’s true there usually isn’t a real OFF switch, but sometimes the issue is not Instagram itself, it’s the account setup and server-side rollout.
A few things to check that are a little different:
- Try logging into Instagram from a browser, not the app. Some privacy/account prompts show there first.
- Check Accounts Center. Meta sometimes hides feature controls there instead of inside Instagram menus.
- If Meta AI is appearing in message suggestions, turn off suggested replies or message enhancement features if your app shows them.
- Leave the beta version of Instagram if you joined it. Beta builds get this stuff early and more aggressively.
- Test with another account on the same phone. If one account has it and the other doesn’t, that tells you it’s account-based, not device-based.
- Offload/reinstall the app after backing up drafts. Not magic, but it can reset weird UI flags.
- If you’re in the EU or UK, review privacy/data settings carefully. Some regions get extra controls that US users don’t.
If none of that changes anything, then yeah, Meta probably hard-enabled it for your account and you can only minimize it, not remove it. Super annyoing, but that’s probly the real answer rn.
