Gmail started showing AI features in my inbox and compose window, and I don’t want them on my account. I’ve tried checking settings but I’m not sure which option actually disables Gmail AI features. I need help turning off AI in Gmail so my email looks and works the way it used to.
If you want Gmail to stop showing AI stuff, there are two main places to check.
-
Turn off Smart features in Gmail
Open Gmail.
Click the gear icon, then See all settings.
Go to the General tab.
Find:
Smart Compose
Smart Reply
Grammar suggestions
Spelling autocorrect
Writing suggestions
Turn those off. -
Turn off Google smart features across Workspace
In Gmail, go to Settings, then See all settings.
Look for Smart features and personalization.
Turn off:
Smart features in Google Workspace
Smart features in other Google products
This is the setting tied to more of Google’s newer AI behavior.
-
If you have Gemini in Gmail
If your account shows Gemini features, click the gear icon or profile area and check for Gemini for Workspace or Google One AI Premium settings.
On work or school accounts, your admin might control this, so you might not be able to disable it yourself. -
Mobile app
In the Gmail app, tap the menu, then Settings, then your account.
Look for Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and smart features. Turn them off there too.
One thing trips people up. Some AI features are account-level, others are app-level. So if you turn it off on desktop but still see it on your phone, check both. Google likes to spread these toggles all over the palce.
What usually confuses people is Gmail has some AI-ish stuff you can disable, and some stuff you can only hide or avoid.
@stellacadente already covered the main toggles, so I’d check one extra thing: if the annoying part is the Gemini side panel or “Help me write” type prompts, try this route:
- In Gmail, click the Gemini sparkle icon if you see it
- Open its panel/settings and look for hide/dismiss options
- If you’re on a paid Google One AI or Workspace plan, the feature may be tied to the subscription, not just Gmail settings
Also, if your inbox is showing summary cards, nudges, package tracking, etc., those are sometimes under the Inbox tab settings, not the obvious AI section. Google kinda scatters this stuff everywhere, which is super anoying.
One small disagreement with @stellacadente: turning off smart features does not always fully remove every newer AI surface. Sometimes it just reduces suggestions, but Gmail still leaves a button or panel sitting there. If that happens, check:
- Google Account privacy/activity settings
- Workspace admin controls if it’s work/school
- Labs/experimental features if your account has them
Worst case, use Basic HTML Gmail in browser as a temporary workaround. It’s ugly, but way less cluttered.
