I’ve tried a few of these selfie-to-portrait apps, and the process is mostly the same in 2026. You upload a batch of clear selfies, usually from a few angles, and the model builds around your face. If your source photos are bad, the output drifts fast. I got better results when I used plain daylight, no heavy filters, and a mix of neutral and slight smile shots. Side angles helped more than I expected.

Distortion usually starts before the app does. Your photo set is the main issue more often than the model.
I’d push back a bit on app-hopping first. Test your input set first. Use 12 to 20 selfies. Keep the camera lens the same. No ultrawide. No beauty mode. No sunglasses. No strong makeup. No hair covering your jawline in every shot. If 8 of your 12 photos have different lighting, the model starts guessing, and the face drifts.
A trick most people skip, crop consistency. Put your face at about the same size in each image. Forehead, eyes, nose, jaw all visible. Add 2 full side angles, 2 three-quarter angles, and 1 plain front shot with flat expression. If you only upload smiling selfies, the model warps your cheeks and eyes.
Also, reject outputs fast. If the first batch misses your nose shape or eye spacing, stop. Don’t keep rerolling in the same app. Change the source set. That saves time and moeny.
I agree with @mikeappsreviewer on one point, Eltima seems stronger at keeping identity stable than a lot of selfie portrait apps. I disagree a bit on stylized presets though. In my tests, heavier presets still drifted.
If this is for a profile update, pick the most boring preset possible. Studio light. Neutral background. Minimal retouching. That gets the least weird reslts.
A lot of the distortion problem is not just the app, it’s the app trying to average a bunch of slightly different versions of your face. I actually disagree a little with the “more selfies fixes it” idea. Sometimes 20 photos is too many if half of them are inconsistent. I’ve had better results with 8 to 12 really clean, boring photos than a giant dump of random camera-roll stuff.
For a profile update, I’d avoid anything that promises “cinematic,” “glam,” or “editorial.” Those presets are where faces get weird fast. Pick the most plain, passport-adjacent style possible, then edit the final image afterward if you want it nicer.
Also, mix in at least one non-selfie if you can. Tripod, timer, or someone else taking it. Selfie lens distortion is real, and some apps learn the wrong proportions from it. That part gets overlooked a lot.
On apps, I mostly agree with @mikeappsreviewer and @himmelsjager that Eltima tends to hold facial identity better than a lot of the fluffier portrait apps. Aragon is decent if you want very safe professional results. I’d skip beauty-heavy apps for this use case unless you’re okay looking like your cousin from an alternate universe lol.
My rule: if the preview already looks “too perfect,” it probly won’t look like you.
